Secret History spoilers.

Preservation kinda-sorta suggests that Kelsier's extraordinary experience with malatium was due, at least in part, to the fact that he used it as he died. I've been kicking around ever since the idea of flatliners; certain mistings who have learned how to hold their bodies at the point of death to enhance their powers. A dangerous art.

Condwyl's mother left the Enclave and moved to a normal town in the roughs. He was lucky enough to be Twinborn, bronze and gold. While she rejected many of the Terris teachings, some of the fundamentals of the spiritualism of their philosophy spoke to her, and she passed those on to him. A group of flat-liners were on the lookout for someone with a power set similar to his, and ended up recruiting him at an impressionable age. They taught him a bit of medicine, specifically what one would need to know to bring the body to the brink of death and hold it there. With his feruchemy, he is uniquely qualified to store health, reducing the drugs required to bring his body to the point of stasis, and can safely go deeper with his reserves ready to bring him back from the brink if required.

With the help of the (let's admit it) cult he's a part of, he has made the journey many times over the years and has learned much about allomantic bronze used at the suspended moment of transition.
