Fields of Ash and Blood [complete]

Shadow looks over the battlefield, his 'improvements' carefully concealed under the salvaged chainmail, and sees Eddard and Robert engaging the Lord Ruler. Those two were always inseparable... Burning Steel, he pushes off several corpses, launching himself toward his allies. It is time.

Shadow pushes off and streaks through the air. The wind whips around him, causing the tassles of his mistcloak to snap audibly. The battleground blurs by beneath him, and in a few moments he lands atop the railing at the prow of The Lord Ruler's ship, perfectly balanced atop it.

Ahead he can see Eddard standing over an inquisitor, and to the left he sees The Lord Ruler standing at the side rail, watching the battle below. Shadow thumps onto the prow of the ship in a defensive stance and begins burning Copper, Tin, Steel and Iron. He considers adding Electrum or Atium to the furnace, and checks his reserves.

As Robert shouts his instructions to his men The Lord Ruler shoots up into the sky like an arrow. A few moments later he lands with a thump less than a dozen paces in front of Robert. The ash has barely begun to rise from his impact when everything shoots away from The Lord Ruler. Everything made of metal anyway.

Soldiers scream as they are flung away or are struck by metal projectiles. Robert tries to leap to the side, following Electrum's cues, but his foot slips and he doesn't make it far enough. A soldier's helmet clips his shoulder, spinning him around and causing him to land hard on his back, knocking the wind out of him. He coughs and snatches his spear, hastily rolling back onto his feet. On his feet again Robert orients himself and turns to find him face to face with his adversary.

Robert screams in outraged fear and backs away from the Lord Ruler, jabbing at him with his spear.

Rashek studied the rebel leader in an eyeblink. His enhanced mental speed let him take note of the defiant look in the man's eyes, tinged with a bit of fear. Rashek took note of his leather armor and stone-tipped weapons- hazekiller armor. The man had no metal on him save for that which was burning in his stomach. Electrum, it was. And the man was well skilled with it, too. Likely an Oracle Savant. That was troubling. It meant that not only did this man know of Electrum's existence and Allomantic Power, but he had been able to obtain an ample supply of it and train extensively with the secret metal. Hopefully he had not told many people of the secret. But no matter if he did, he certainly would not have a chance to tell anyone else.

Shadow burns Atium, and the world explodes into an array of blue Atium shadows. Focusing in, he sees Eddard's shadow release the Inquisitor and turn to chase after The Lord Ruler.

No Eddard, not yet.

Shadow ironpulls a discarded sword towards him from the deck of the ship, and inhales deeply...

From the corner of his eye, Eddard sees The Lord Ruler start to step up onto the railing. Eddard starts to let his weight up off of the inquisitor when he hears his name being called.

"No Eddard! Hold it!"

Jastes' voice. Eddard drops his knee onto the thrashing inquisitor's abdomen just as a sword zips though the air point first, piercing the inquisitor's neck and pinning it to the deck with a loud "thunk!" The inquisitor stops it's struggling and lies still.

Could it really be dead that easily? The other inquisitor shrugged off several mortal wounds before it died...

Eddard blinks in surprise, but just as he does the inquisitor jerks, slipping out from underneath Eddard's weigh and wrenching it's neck free from the sword. Blood gushes out of the wound for a few brief seconds before the wound closes up. The Inquisitor scrambles to its feet, a panicked expression on its face.

Robert scrambles back, stabbing his spear at The Lord Ruler in a desperate attempt to get some space between them. Where are the others of our team? Vorun and Eddard, or Jastes? They are the ones who are supposed to be fighting this monster, not me! The Lord Ruler slapped the spear aside and dashed forward. Robert searched through his Electrum shadows frantically- the frightened looks on their faces doing nothing to settle his nerves- then followed one. He dove forward in a roll, dodging beneath The Lord Ruler's punch and coming to his feet behind his foe.

Rashek turned to face the elusive Oracle, and said, "Tell me, before I kill you, how did you learn of Electrum? Which of my priests do I need to punish?"

Shadow draws a handful of coins from his pouch, takes careful aim at the inquisitor's Atium shadow, and pushes them. He is still amazed at the new power of his allomancy. The coins zip through the air faster than his eye can follow, striking the inquisitor's head with perfect accuracy. The creature staggers back, still upright thanks to its blasted Pewter, but clearly dazed. Eddard seizes the opportunity to dash in and slam the butt of his spear against the inquisitor's leg, shattering it's knee-cap. It cries out in pain, staggering back desperately.

Shadow revels at the violence, at the inquisitor's inevitable defeat, at the pure sense of destructiveness welling up inside him.

Eddard spins his spear around to strike again, but as he does the inquisitor raises it's hands, telegraphing it's intent. Even as he feels the steelpush hit him, Eddard is already rolling to the side. The move throws the inquisitor's aim off, and the creature flies back, slamming into the mast that Eddard had been pinned against moments before. It bounces off awkwardly and sprawls to the deck, it's multiple injuries finally catching up to it.

Robert couldn't help it. He laughed, amazed at the Lord Ruler's ignorance at the same time as he cowered inwardly at the god's power.

"You're a bit late for that, Mr. God. The obligator who told Erikell of Electrum has been dead, oh, three hundred years. It's been a family secret ever since!"

Robert, hoping he'd surprised the monster, moved to lunge with his spear.

The inquisitor swats uselessly at the air as Shadow pelts it with another handful of glittering coins, each one leaving its mark in blood upon the creature.

Coins aren't enough... Need something more...

Shadow reaches out with iron and yanks the sword from the deck, then sends it spinning at the inquisitor's head...

Eddard sees his chance as Jastes' onslaught of coins lets up momentarily. He springs forward, spear poised to strike. The inquisitor ducks as a sword spins past, barely avoiding being decapitated. Eddard leaps forward and drives his spear through the creature's chest. The inquisitor jerks once, then vomits blood. It looks up angrily and grabs ahold of the spear haft with one hand, and Eddard's throat with the other. Eddard feels its fingers creep up under his helmet and around his neck.

Then the monster spasms, the sword that it had ducked seconds before now jutting from its neck. Its head nods forward, seeming to look down at the bloody sword-point, then it slumps to the ground, dead.

The Lord Ruler scowls at Robert's taunting, then begins... changing. His frame swells up to inhuman proportions, his muscles so large that his suit begins splitting at the seams. The tyrant lunges forward impossibly fast, and Robert jabs his spear wildly in defense. The Lord Ruler brushes the spear aside effortlessly, then slams his fist into Robert's chest.

The world lurches, and Robert finds himself on the ground. He tries to gasp in a breath, but it only triggers a fit of coughing. Each cough triggers a fresh surge of agony bursting in his chest. His ribs were certainly broken, and he'd probably be dead if not for his leather cuirass. He is dimly aware of the Lord Ruler standing over him, speaking to him.

"...finished with your pathetic army, it appears I will have to pay House Erikell a visit."

Robert rolls away from his, doing his best to refrain from coughing anymore, and here's another sound.

"For Lord Erikell!"

He looks to the side and through watery eye, he sees a ragged line of his soldiers drawing their bows. "No..." he gasps, his voice barely more than a whisper, "Don't..." But it isn't enough, they can't hear him. Robert shifts his gaze to the blue cloud of Electrum shadows dancing about him.

It's over...

Robert had always relied on his shadows, always trusted them to guide him to the best version of his future. Sometimes he didn't read them quickly enough, or didn't react well enough to actualize the best possiblities, but they were always there, a promise of a perfect future just a few seconds ahead of him in time.

But none of his futures are bright now. To all sides, Robert sees himself dying. Rent to pieces, stabbed, decapitated, burned, broken. Killed. He had watched himself die a thousand times- a hundred thousand times- but there had always been a way to escape. Not this time. This isn't a matter of not moving or thinking fast enough: there is no perfect future, no future at all.

Though defeated, Robert extinguishes his electrum and stands to face his fate, as the Lord Ruler follows through on electrum's promise.

His soldiers let their arrows fly. The tyrant jumps back, and the arrows pass between him and Robert. For a brief moment time seems to stop, and Robert can make out each of the arrows, arrowheads glinting in the sunlight. The metal arrowheads. With tears clouding his vision, they seemed to sparkle before him. He imagines that this must be what the "stars" that Jastes told him about must look like. It was beautiful, just like his friend had said.

The stars flash, streaking towards him.

Rashek exhaled slowly as his enemy's corpse fell to the ground. Inside his head Ruin cackled and taunted him, but he ignored the voice.

He turned to face the rebel soldiers scattered around him, and resumed the slaughter.

Sparing a look for Eddard, Jastes springs into the air again, positioning himself for the final battle.

"NO!" Eddard shouts as he sees Robert fall. You will pay for that tyrant!

Tears streaming down his face Eddard leaps from the ship and sprints towards the lord ruler.
