Arbitrary shoutbox message deletion?

Post by Kurkistan » Wed Dec 03, 2014 11:42 am

An issue has come to my attention. I know that mods/admins have the power to delete stuff from the shoutbox, but it seems that the computers might have finally begun to rise against us.

Specifically, I've seen at least 2 different messages deleted from the chatbox in the last week or two, neither of which I think would have been deleted on purpose.

The first was my filling in for Kadrok and pestering Hero about DL. I'd assumed that I might have just forgot to hit Enter or something, and so wrote it off. But just recently Tec wrote a message saying how the site normally goes slowly around this time of year, to which Mac replied (and Mac's reply, as well as my message right before Tec's, is still there). I distinctly recall seeing Tec's message for at least a few hours, and now it's vanished without a trace.

Weird. Hope it isn't just my fat thumbs (since I've been stuck on phone for a while, and I'm sure touchscreen accidents happen every now and then...). I wonder if there's a delete-log?

Yeah, now that you mention it it's probably just Kadrok's fat thumbs, since this all started around the time he went adventuring, and it's a more likely explanation than some phantom bug. :P

Odd.I'll check the logs and see.

Nope. No logs for the shoutbox, but it certainlydid delete the post.

Hm.

Is there a way to throw in an "Are you sure?" dialog for deletion so we can avoid further causalities on the Kadrokpocalypse?

I just wrote and deleted a shoutbox message and that action doesn't show up in the moderator control panel either. Maybe it just doesn't log the shoutbox at all?

Edit: Also it doesn't stay deleted. It disappears when I hit the delete button, but as soon as I reload the page it's back. Can any of you see my "This is a test, please ignore" message in the shoutbox?

I still see it too. Maybe if someone who's not me deleted it?

I have deleted the message, and it seems to be gone. Maybe you have enough permissions to see the delete button, but not enough to REALLY use the button.

That would explain everything and make no sense at all at the same time!

(Going with the scientific method, the next step would be for tec to delete his own post and see if that works.)
